Activ E-Book Compiler is a true bargain! I was amazed at how easy it was to use and the extra password protection and ESBN features are worth the price many times over...

General E-Book Questions

What is an E-Book ?

E-Book is short for Electronic Book - basically a book delivered in an electronic format (on a computer).

Different people talking about E-Books in many situations - for example Electronic Books that are designed to be read on a handheld computer.

When we talk about our E-Book in the context of Activ E-Book Compiler (which is our software), we always mean E-Books designed to run on PC's which run the Microsoft Windows operating system.

What kind of E-Books do people buy ?

The simplest answer is almost any kind. With hundreds of millions people online, there are people interested in many different kinds of subjet matter.

The single most important tip is to write about what you know about.

The second most important tip is to write a subject which interests you, and that you enjoy writing about. Your readers will be able to tell.

Do not make the mistake of thinking your E-Book must be about Making Money or Internet Marketing - people are interested in many other things besides.

You may find it easier to sell an E-Book that will be of interest to a general audience, rather than the small proportion who are Internet Entrepeneurs:
  • What makes your E-Book valuable is that it provides information that people can not easily get elsewhere.

  • The more exclusive and useful the information, the chances are, the more you can sell it for. High quality professional reports, based on detailed research are far more valuable (per copy) than general interest or fun e-books.

  • Many of the most popular E-Books are "How To" guides or Reference Manuals.
You can find a directory of many information products and e-books at our web site EBookJungle.com.

(And if you create your own e-book, you can submit it there for free too)

What is and How Do I Get... An E-Book Cover

An E-Book Cover is an image that looks like a picture of a book. The coolest ones look like they are 3D and can have shadows or reflections.

Many people like to have Covers for their eBooks because:
  • They can use them in advertising materials or on their web site
  • They can use the image on the first page of their actual E-Book
  • They can use the cover images to make a better impression on potential customers

How do I accept payment for my E-Books ?

You can ask people to send you a check or money order, or use bank wire transfer...

...But the most powerful way to make sales on the Internet is to accept credit cards. If you don't accept credit cards you could be losing 90% or more of your potential customers. In the bad old days of the Internet, accepting credit cards required professional web hosting (expensive), a special arrangement with your bank and more - but now it's easy:
  • You can use a turnkey payment processing or sales service. They will do all the hard technical stuff for you, and mail you checks for your sales. We recommend ClickBank. We've been working with them for many years without even the slightest hint of a problem.
  • You can get a merchant account. This can be more expensive to setup - but still within reach of most businesses. If you're interested in this option, we recommend you visit MerchantKit.com

Questions about using Activ E-Book Compiler

What is the Activ E-Book Compiler ?

Activ E-Book Compiler is a tool for creating E-Books ("Electronic Books").

The program converts a directory of HTML files into a self-contained Windows Executable program that you can easily distribute. The Windows program that is created is the E-Book.

The Windows Executable program will work on all recent versions of Wndows on a PC, including Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and more.

The author of the E-Book may also take advantage of special program features such as Password Protection (prevents users from accessing part or all of the E-Book until they enter a password).

Is the program hard to use ?

Activ E-Book Compiler is a very simple and straightforward program with an intuitive Windows based user interface. It comes with full instructions explaining exactly how to create your own E-Books.

Do I need to be an Internet expert to use Activ E-Book Compiler ?

Are there any special requirements for how I create my HTML files ?

Activ E-Book Compiler supports all the main Internet Explorer's web browser features. You may use the exact the same HTML, graphics, and so on that you would use if designing your home page.

All the files that make your E-Book should be placed in a single directory, and you use should use relative links, like <A HREF=file.html> or <IMG SRC=graphic.gif>, between your pages and to your image files.

It is also important to remember that when most people view your E-Book they will probably not be connected to the Internet. Therefore we recommend any links to external web sites or graphics are opened in a new window (these will then open in Internet Explorer automatically, and give the user a chance to connect to the Internet) by using TARGET=_blank, as in <A HREF=http://www.somesite.com TARGET=_blank>.

You should also remember that there are some differences between how HTML files work on your local disk (when used in an E-Book) as compared to how those same files work when used on your web site:
  • File names on your local disk are not case sensitive - whereas on most web hosts, file names are case sensitive. Thus page1.html and Page1.html might be different files on your web site, but they shouldn't be in your E-Book.
  • Depending on your web host, you may have server-side technologies such as CGI, ASP, PHP3 or SSI available when developing your web site. These technologies should not be used in your E-Book, as users will not be connected to your web site when viewing their E-Book.
  • There are a few differences in the way cookies and JavaScripts are handled when looking at local files as compared to viewing a web site. If you use JavaScript or cookies in your pages - we recommend you perform extra testing to avoid any problems.
  • Some web plug-ins may be designed to only operate in an Internet environment (and not when viewing content that is already on a user's computer). Other web plug-ins may require special setting of parameters etc. to work with local files.
The best way to avoid problems is simply to test your E-Books thoroughly before distributing them. It is very unlikely you will have any problems with Activ E-Book Compiler, but if you make a mistake in your HTML you do not want to be distributing E-Books containing these mistakes.

Where can I create a web site to promote my E-Book ?

There are literally dozens of companies offering free and paid web hosting for web sites. Some free hosts may add unwanted banners or annoying pop-ups to your site, and you won't have a particularly memorable URL. With paid hosting you normally get your own domain name (www.yoursite.com), and usually much better technical support.

If you are looking for a web host, we recommend that you visit, WebHostingPicks.com or HostingCavern.com both which contain links to a wide range of web hosts to choose from.

How can I get other sites to link to me ?

Once you have your own product you can draw traffic by getting other sites to link to you - in return for a percentage commission of sales they help you make - known as an "affiliate program"

If lots of sites link to you, it should increase your traffic and sales.

There are many ways to setup and run an affiliate program. Here are some ideas:
  • If you use ClickBank as your means of accepting payment by credit card - you can setup your own affiliate program at no extra cost. They deal with tracking and issuing payments to your affiliate.
  • Click here for a more detailed guide to setting up your affiliate program. It's easier than you might think!
